Description
Five strands of Ni’ihau shell make up this lei, delicate white Laiki rice shells strung in the Kipona style with clusters of Kahelelani shells in red, pink, gold, and brown. The color clusters fall at staggered points along the strands, so the pattern shifts as the five rows lie together. It measures approximately 20 inches in length and weighs 39.3 grams, with a hook-and-eye closure hidden behind a pair of cowrie shells at the ends. This lei was strung entirely by hand in Hawaii from shells gathered on Ni’ihau.
